We encourage the development of theory and musicianship skills from the earliest stages of instrumental learning.

As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence.

Candidates are required to pass Grade 5 Theory in order to progress to practical exams at Grades 6, 7 and 8.


Theory exams provide assessment of the theoretical knowledge necessary to become a well-rounded musician.
